We're hiring a Senior Backend Developer to own service architecture, scalability, and operational quality across client products. You'll make decisions that affect reliability, security, and delivery speed, and help the team avoid costly rework before code reaches production. You've led backend workstreams, debugged production incidents, and can explain trade-offs to engineers and business stakeholders.
Key responsibilities
- Design scalable service boundaries, APIs, and data models for new product areas and refactors
- Lead implementation of auth, billing, integrations, webhooks, and async workflows at production scale
- Define standards for logging, monitoring, alerting, incident response, and on-call handoffs
- Review architecture proposals, database designs, and security-sensitive changes before merge
- Mentor backend engineers through code review, pairing, and technical design sessions
- Collaborate on technical discovery, estimates, and delivery roadmaps with clients or product leads
- Optimise database performance, caching layers, and background job throughput under load
- Drive improvements to CI/CD, staging environments, and safe deployment practices
- Investigate production incidents, write post-mortems, and implement preventive measures
- Support hiring through technical interviews and evaluation of backend take-home exercises
Requirements
- 5+ years of backend development in production environments with ownership of critical services
- Expert-level TypeScript/Node.js and strong SQL database design, indexing, and query optimisation
- Experience operating systems on cloud infrastructure with CI/CD and infrastructure-as-code basics
- Deep understanding of security: OWASP risks, auth patterns, secrets rotation, and least privilege
- Proven ability to design for idempotency, concurrency, retries, and distributed-system failure modes
- Track record leading features or backend workstreams across multiple engineers
- Comfort presenting technical options, risks, and timelines to non-engineering stakeholders
- Experience with observability stacks: structured logs, metrics, tracing, and error tracking
- English: Advanced (C1) or higher for architecture discussions, client calls, and written specs
Nice to have
- Event-driven architectures, Kafka, SNS/SQS, or workflow orchestration tools
- Multi-tenant SaaS, high-traffic APIs, or marketplace platform experience
- Previous tech-lead or backend chapter-lead role in an agency or product company
- Kubernetes, ECS, or serverless operational experience beyond basic deployments
- Contributions to internal platforms, developer tooling, or platform engineering initiatives
